AFTERCARE
Saniderm/Second Skin
APPLICATION & DURATION
We apply the second skin at the end of your tattoo appointment.
Leave your second skin bandage on for 2-7 days,
based on artist recommendation.
Your body will push ink and plasma to the surface, preventing
the adhesive from sticking to your tattoo. Larger and more
saturated tattoos will produce more fluid, and may require longer
under the bandage to get through the weeping phase.
During this time, you may shower normally. Avoid
lengthy exposure to water (bathing or soaking)
and excessive sweating.
Keep heavy exercise to a minimum.
REMOVAL & AFTERCARE
It is easiest to remove second skin bandages with the help of
running water, either in the shower or at a sink.
Keep your skin taught and remove the bandage as gently as possible.
Using clean hands (no loofas or wash cloths), wash with
unscented soap, rinse thoroughly, and leave to
air dry or dry your tattoo with paper towel.
Apply a light layer of ointment and let your tattoo rest.
Continue washing and moisturizing
as needed for the following 2 weeks.
If you have any questions/concerns involving aftercare for your tattoo, PLEASE contact your artist! We are here to help! :-)
Traditional Aftercare
-Remove the bandage your artist put on your tattoo 1-3 hours after you get home, or leave on overnight if instructed. Wash the tattoo with a simple liquid soap (Softsoap, Liquid Dial, Dawn), or the bar of soap provided in your aftercare kit and warm water. Pat dry with paper towel or air dry. Do not use a bath towel/washcloth on your tattoo! Once skin is completely dry, apply a thin layer of your preferred ointment.
*We provide an aftercare kit to our clients who prefer ointment healing over Saniderm which includes a bar of soap/loofa bag and a sample size of a locally-made tattoo balm we love, Toad and Turnip Tattoo Balm! You are also welcome to use A+D or Aquaphor on your tattoo if you prefer. *
-For the first two nights before bed, we recommend washing your tattoo and then wrapping it in plastic/Saran wrap without ointment overnight. This will prevent dust, lint, hair, etc. from getting into your tattoo while you are asleep, as well as protect your sheets from any type of ink/plasma leakage from your tattoo.
-Toad & Turnip and other select balms can be used over the the entire 2-4 weeks. A+D, Aquaphor, and other ointments can be used for the first 3 to 4 days. After 3-4 days, a new layer of skin will begin to form over your tattoo and that will indicate that it is time to switch over to a gentle, fragrance-free lotion (i.e. Aveeno, Eucerin, or Cetaphil).
-After about 1 week, your tattoo will begin to peel and flake. DO NOT PICK AT OR ITCH IT! Instead, try gently slapping, washing, or moisturizing it!
-A few things to avoid in the first 2 weeks of healing: Soaking your tattoo (baths, pools, hot tubs, lakes, etc.), saunas, tanning beds, and direct sun exposure.
At the end of the day, every tattoo and every body is different and aftercare may need to be adjusted depending on lifestyle, occupation, rate of healing, etc. The main things to keep an eye out for during the healing process are signs of infection and signs of your tattoo scabbing. Signs of infection include: excessive heat coming from the tattoo, sharp pain, discharge coming from the tattoo, or fever. This will require medical attention and we advise that you contact a doctor as soon as possible. For all other questions, reach out to your artist for feedback and assistance!
